Reflection Project 3

The Process of Mentoring & Coaching paper should help you mentor and coach Christians in another cultural context. Keith Webb (2019) says that “coaching isn’t about teaching someone what we know. Coaching is about helping people learn” (p. 12).

Section 1: Contrast mentoring and coaching, including which style that you typically use and why.

Section 2: Ask some local leaders which ways that they are being mentored and coached fit their culture or which parts seem foreign to them. Being sensitive to the cultural context and the people involved is key. Which questions will help them to solve their problems rather than depend on the coach? For instance, Webb (2019) uses the following questions:

  • What result would you like from our conversation? How have you handled this situation in the past? What is important for you to know about this? Where could you find the information you need? What ideas do you have? What options do you see? What insights occur to you? What will you do to move forward? What decisions do you need to make? (pp. 23-24).

Section 3: Apply the concepts of advising versus asking questions, trusting the Holy Spirit (John 14:26) versus know-it-all-ism, ascribed versus achieved status, indirect versus direct communication, group versus individual orientation and shame versus honor where appropriate.

Section 4: Suggest other ways that you can contextualize your mentoring and coaching in a way that is most meaningful to the Christians in your particular cultural context. You will develop this further in the Application Paper.
