3 Hermeneutics Assignment Copy

Instructions

Build a comprehensive list of observations (no less than 10) about Jonah 4:10-11.  Refer back to the examples in your textbook and the list on p. 81 for help.  Because it is so important to see connections in the text, it is recommended that you mark up the passage first, and then make a list of your observations.  If you prefer, you may mark up the passage in a Google Doc and submit that rather than a list.  Find as many observations as you can.  Be thorough!

After you have completed the observations complete Assignment 8-2 (p. 162) in Grasping God’s Word.  For your convenience, the questions are copied below:

Turn to the Old Testament book of Jonah and do the following:

  1. Read the entire book of Jonah and identify how the book is divided into paragraphs or sections.
  2. Summarize the main idea of each section in about a dozen words or less.
  3. Explain how your particular passage (use Jonah 1:13-16 for this exercise) relates to the surrounding context.

Look for changes in the text (listed on p. 159) that serve as “clues to a shift in the author’s flow of thought” (p. 159).

Submit completed assignment by Sunday at 11:59 PM (CST).
