Vulnerability and Resiliency

This course examines the concept of vulnerability and the various ways that people and communities are more susceptible to disaster. It then explores various ways that relief and development professionals can foster resiliency in the communities that they serve.

Holistic Ministry to the Poor

A continuation of the Foundations of Holistic Ministry class, this course widens students’ perspectives on poverty, stressing that poverty is more than just material need. Students will address their own destructive perspectives (and their own poverty) and consider the harm done by destructive ministry practices. New perspectives on poverty will be provided as a way to more effectively develop approaches to addressing broken systems and broken people in ministry.

Asset Based Community Development

This course helps students think through the process of helping communities (even church communities) develop by focusing on their assets rather than their needs. Asset-Based approaches including appreciative inquiry and asset mapping will be addressed. The class will conclude with a project that helps the students apply asset-based approaches to their own ministry contexts.

Intercultural Holistic Discipleship

This course emphasizes the cognitive (thinking), volitional (valuing) and behavioral (doing) aspects to developing Christian character in people’s lives from a different cultural context than the student’s. Emphasis is placed on the relational empowering of disciples to their own cultural contexts dependent on the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.

Multicultural Team Conflict Resolution

This course will enable you to understand how to build trust and resolve cross-cultural conflict in multicultural teams.  Focus will be given on respecting differences while communicating across cultures in appropriate manners, mediation, and power dynamics.
